the start of my year 2015

Hi!

It has been a really long time! I have been concentrating on my freelance work, (lettering/bokstavsillustration), and my family for the past months. I am working on two big lettering projects and some custom orders and it takes up most of my day time plus most of my free time as well (except for the time I spend working in the shoe shop and with my family). I am not a very social person right now, but if you want to achieve goals and get better at your craft you need to invest time and hard work. I can see that I am getting better, and I really love doing what I am investing my time in.

I am bursting with joy and honour on the big projects I am working on, but they are still secret, so I cannot brag about my great collaborations. But it will be sweet when the collaborations are being reveiled later this year!

I am continuously a member of the Andetag team and blogging at Hufvudstadsbladet (a collaboration with the Finnish Lutheran Church) about everyday life, faith, joys and fears.

A really, really fun part of my freelance work is that I get to hold Lettering Workshops and meet other type enthusiasts. So far this year I've held an longer one week course at Novia for students and four short one day workshops, together with Nykarleby Arbis, Kronoby MI and Inpress and Personlig Almanacka in Uppsala. Someone i Uppsala had found my Instagram profile and wanted to arrange a workshops, so they gathered a bunch of friends from work and we had a great day of lettering! I love it when people arrange workshops at their work or with their friends! And I love being invited to hold Lettering Workshops, the courses are really inspiring for me as well, there is so much creativity in one person, and to meet groups of creative people is fantastic. I am always surprised at what people create during a workshop and at the same time I know that when a person is saying "I cannot draw or write well with a pencil" there will come great things out of that hand holding the pencil. That is the magic of these workshops, everybody will create new and good looking letterings, whether they have done it before or not. And everybody seems happy after a workshop, it is intense so you get tired but everybody has been giving me positive feedback. That they CAN draw, that they WERE ABLE to make lovely letterings, something they never thought they would make. Makes me very happy!

the words of dear astrid

I have a huge weakness for Astrid Lindgren, and I am not the only one. In June I lettered a quote by the world famous author of children's books, as a gift for our wonderful kindergarten personnel. It says: "Show the children love, more love and even more love and common sense will come by itself". It was not meant as an advice, because these women and men know this by heart, but more as an encouragement to keep up their great work. I am very thankful for the personnel at our kindergarten!

I printed this one in a limited first edition, but many have asked for it, so I am thinking of printing round two. Stay tuned! (And if you are interested in a print don't hesitate to ask via fialottajansson[at]gmail[dot]com!)

diy fake origami wall art

Hello!  I have been wanting to do this craft project for so long and finally I got around to.

It is simple and fun:

Materials I used:
- printer
- black cardstock
- metal ruler
- utility knife
- a mat to cut on
- tape
- double sided tape


1. Print your origami figure. I chose a font from DaFont called Origami Bats, it is free to download for personal use! I enlarged the font in Illustrator and separated the parts so I could fit the size I wanted on an A4 paper, since I can only print that size at home.

2. I started with the bear. I taped the templates to black cardstock and cut the pieces out with the help of a metal ruler.

3. As I cut the pieces of my origami bear I numbered them, both on the pieces and on a copy of the bear in smaller size. That way I did not lose any parts and I would know how to assemble them later on.

4. I made a cardstock stick to be able to measure the space between the pieces. You can use black cardstock, but I chose to make one in another colour. And then I just used double sided tape to fasten the paper pieces to the wall.

And finito!

Lettering Workshop i Jakobstad

Jag gillar verkligen att hålla Lettering Workshops! Senast fick jag jobba med studerande vid Yrkeshögskolan Novia i Jakobstad. Det var en valbar kurs och hela 34(!) studerande anmälde sig. Det var otroligt motiverade grafiker, formgivare, musiker och bildkonststuderande som gav mig förtroende att under nästan två veckor jobba med att rita bokstäver och ord.

För mig känns det stort att dra en Lettering Workshop. Jag får inspirera personer till att skapa och jag blir inspirerad av att se dem skapa. Nedanför finns ett litet urval av vad de skapat, monogram, citat-tavlor, foto+bokstavsillustration. Visst är de skickliga! Och ännu mera hann vi med i verkligheten!

Under våren kommer jag att hålla Lettering Workshops vid Nykarleby Arbis 21-22.3, (de två kurserna är redan fullbokade, men köa för reservplats, ifall det blir en plats ledig!), och vid Kronoby Medborgarinstitut den 20.3. I Kronoby finns ännu plats. Klicka på namnen för att komma till anmälningen!

Jag är så fantastiskt glad över all uppskattning och fin feedback jag fått för typografikalendern! Jag har sett den i användning i många hem och jag har själv två kalendrar i användning varje dag. Vi har en familjekalender som hänger på kylskåpet och så har jag en för mitt arbetsschema och mina frilansjobb, för att hålla koll på projekt och deadlines.

Typografikalendern 2015 består av tolv fristående A4 ark med handritad typografi på lyxigare papper. För varje dag i månaden finns det gott om rum att skriva in roligheter och viktigheter. Kalendern kan hängas upp med magnetclips, pappersklämmor, på galgar, med tejp eller nålas upp på anslagstavla.

Ett kalenderpaket innehåller förutom själva kalendern även en blyertspenna med uppmuntrande ord, allt snyggt paketerat!

I år säljer jag inga kalenderpaket med magnetclips eller pappersklämmor, de kan du enkelt köpa härifrån, härifrån eller härifrån.

The Typographic Calendar 2014 is a practical hand lettered calendar with twelve separate sheets of A4 size papers. All text is in Swedish.

A set of the calendar and a pencil with a hand written quote is 220 SEK (including 25% VAT) + shipping 60 kr/order.

If you pre-order before November 16th you will pay only 190 kr + 60 kr/order.
