the words of dear astrid

I have a huge weakness for Astrid Lindgren, and I am not the only one. In June I lettered a quote by the world famous author of children's books, as a gift for our wonderful kindergarten personnel. It says: "Show the children love, more love and even more love and common sense will come by itself". It was not meant as an advice, because these women and men know this by heart, but more as an encouragement to keep up their great work. I am very thankful for the personnel at our kindergarten!

I printed this one in a limited first edition, but many have asked for it, so I am thinking of printing round two. Stay tuned! (And if you are interested in a print don't hesitate to ask via fialottajansson[at]gmail[dot]com!)

I wish you all a great week!

make a book DIY (crafting with kids)

This is an easy, fun and fast DIY with the kids. I loved making books as a kid. Me and a friend sat in the sauna (a cold one I need to ad!) and drew cartoons in our home made books. We mostly drew Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Oh, those were the days!

The first steps of this DIY I drew. The final step, binding the book, is up to you, how you wish to execute it. Use thread and start weaving through the holes. My kids did it one way, I did it another. Be creative!

(An extra picture of my daughter Magda crafting. She loves it and she is very talented as well. She inspires me!)

Summertime is great time for crafting, either indoors or outdoors. Hope you all have a fine summer!

linda's tattoo (lettering by fia lotta jansson design)

(screen shot from Linda's Instagram @lindaslantliga)

I had the priviledge of designing a tattoo for Linda (with the fabulous blog Lindas Lantliga). I really love designing tattoos. It is a great responsibility and a grand honour! Designer and customer were very happy with this result.

The photos are Linda's and she gave me permission to use them.

Are you interested in a hand lettered tattoo?

I wish you all a great Wednesday!

life update

Hello!

It's been a really long time since I greeted readers of this blog (are you still there?). Much has happened in the past months. Both happy things and really sad things. Life and death.

Two wonderful persons passed away only two weeks apart in early January, my father and my young godson. They are grieved by so many, families and friends, they were important in so many people's lives. All the bright and laughterfilled memories they gave me keep me warm, though sadness is a constant companion.

So much good has happened as well: a lot of lettering, print making, teaching of lettering workshops, family time, spending time with old friends, getting to know new friends, enjoying my dayjob, meaningsful conversations, and so on and so on!

Life takes its turns. I am hanging in there. How are you?

And now my life in pictures. 2014 so far:

I get to see my children grow and develop, exploring their creativity. I love that I get to be a part of their lives. I am a terrible and angry mother sometimes, quite often actually, but we are good togehter.

(Both kids write and read already. It is amazing! These are the scribbles of my daughter, she´s the younger one.)

Lina and me are planning goodness together. Graphic Design Lettering Combo!

The cat in my parent's home had a kitten. So adorable!

Boring and fantastic every day life: laundry time!

I was hooked on origami for a while there, and I will not let it go! Love it!

My father camping in the 70's. Miss him very much.

Trying to focus on these two: hope and gratitude...

...because life is not always easy.

Me and fellow vintage lovers Malin of Fiffi's Vintage and Carolina of Marshmallow Electra at Uppsala Vintage Festival last weekend.

And finally: the man of my life, in a band playing music that I love! The Heartbeat Band.

Thank you and good night!

upcycled doll quilt

We had a bag of grown out and worn out clothes. I wanted to make some rag rugs and the kids wanted to re-design. They cut off sleeves and cuffs, patterns and prints and made new use of the old.

I made something I had wanted to do for a loooooong time: a quilt. I am not patienced, nor am I skilled in the art of quilting, so a small doll quilt was enough to still my abstinence without me getting fed up and stop in the middle of the sewing.

I cut squares from kids's t-shirts, long sleeves, onzies and tights, neatly using all fabric from the small garments. After sewing the squares together I used the back of my husbands old jersey cardigan for the back of the quilt. I cut the back about 1 cm bigger on every side, folded the jersey fabric over to the front of the quilted piece, and just sew along the sides leaving a rough edge.

I calmed by anxious quilting nerves with this two hour project. And my daughter have great use for it when putting her doll to sleep in her bed or stroller.

Maybe you have got some old clothing you can upcycle to something useful?

All the best!
Sofie
