How do I make mosaic pieces?

What is the best way to break porcelain to get good mosaic pieces?
I would like to make a number sign for our house, but I am not sure about the breaking part. Haven't thrown enough dishes in my days:)

How do you do it?

I would start by breaking them into big pieces inside a plastic bag. You can either drop them, or maybe hit them with a hammer. Then you can use tile nippers or another mosaic tool to make smaller pieces in the shape you want. There are a lot of mosaic supply stores online that could give you ideas of what tools to look for.
